Using SIR-CED CD-ROM in Classroom
(Step by Step Instructions for Teachers)
SIR-CED CD ROM
To Do Ahead of Time
- photocopy pages of instructions
one folder per computer to be used over again or
one folder per group if using one monitor per class
- photocopy student activity sheet for folder
- copy images needed for each day into folder on desktop
Students need to know how to use
- Macintosh basic instructions
- Netscape browser
- back, forward and stop buttons at the top of browser page
- txt. and
pic. software (will load automatically in guided tour
but explanation necessary)
txt - simple word processing program
pic - general purpose image processing program to display
pictures
Guided Tour

load CD-ROM, click on icon
- click on Guided Tour
- read down to and click on
The SIR-CED03 Preview
- Don't click on movies to show - takes too long. Go to QTMovies folder, load
movies directly, and place on desktop ahead of time.
Preselect movies: launch & land movie, gorilla movie
At appropriate time, run movies from simple player (select simple player from
upper right hand corner of screen)
Click on photos or explanations then return to Guided Tour first page

- Demo how to do student activity by opening one folder
- explain about undo operation (just click OK)

software to move picture around
- go back to original icon and demo where
Data
folder is
- assign each group a category in classification folder to investigate.
Students Projects:
- students will investigate their topic and
report to class information learned
- students will present information to class on TV monitor
- restrict beginning students to only use
txt and pic software
- Questions to be answered: (see next page to photocopy)
- Describe the area you are studying
- Of what particular interest is there to study in this area?
- What information is available about your area?
- How was this information obtained?
- What did you learn about your area?
- Project might require outside information to be
presented as well, e.g. locate area
on atlas, look for articles or additional info

STUDENT ACTIVITY
1. Place the SIR-CED03 CD-ROM in the CD drive.
2. Double click on the icon to open the CD-ROM.
3. Double click on the Guided Tour if you have not run this yet. If already demonstrated
go to #4.
4. Double click on the Data folder.
5. Double click on the Classification folder.
5. Double click on the area that your group has been assigned to investigate.
6. Double click on your assigned folder and choose a particular area to investigate.
7. Answer the following questions and be prepared to present to the class what you
learn:
- Describe the area you are studying.
- Of what particular interest is there to study in this area?
- What information is available about your area?
- How was this information obtained?
- What did you learn about this area?
