To your students, when using the Guided Tour, it will appear as if they are surfing the Web. In fact, their activities will be largely restricted to exploring the wealth of data on the SIRCED03 CD-ROM. This has its advantages: access to files via CD-ROM is much faster than over the Internet, so there is less risk of students getting bored and restive while waiting for files to download. This approach also means you can show students how the World Wide Web works, without having to connect to the Internet itself.
Since you're reading this from within the Guided Tour, you have already successfully started the Netscape Browser. To start browsing through the CD-ROM, simply click on any highlighted words you see on each page. For example, in the Guided Tour page, you should see the words:
Point the mouse at this text and click. This will open up a new page which will appear in the same window, and gives a preview of what's on the CD-ROM. To move around the CD-ROM, click on more highlighted words, or use the Back and Forward buttons at the top of the window. If you find a page is taking too long to load and you want to move on to something else, click on the Stop button at the top of the window.
If your computer already has Internet access, you will find links on the SIRCED03 CD-ROM which take you to a companion Home Page to this CD and to NASA's Spacelink Web site. You can get to many other sites on the World Wide Web through these sites.
Please note: The PC Special Edition of this CD includes the newer Netscape 2.0 browser with more capabilities.
