How to Obtain Additional SIR-C/X-SAR Materials

This information sheet explains how NASA photographs, slides, mission status information, and CD-ROMs produced by the SIR-C/X-SAR Project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, can be obtained by scientists, educators, and the general public. SIR-C/X-SAR is a joint US/German/Italian mission which flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in April and October, 1994 as part of the Space Radar Laboratory.

The Space Radar Laboratory, part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth, studied how our global environment is changing. From the unique vantage point of space, SIR-C/X-SAR observed and monitored large-scale environmental processes with a focus on climate change. The spaceborne data, complemented by aircraft and ground studies, give scientists highly detailed information to help them distinguish natural environmental changes from those that are the result of human activity.

Internet Computer Access

The Imaging Radar Group at JPL have set up a World Wide Web server site, which can be accessed using a browse tool such as NCSA's Mosaic. The URL for the site is: http://southport.jpl.nasa.gov/companion/ The site contains up-to-date information on the imaging radar program at JPL, radar images and results from the two SIR-C missions, sample data and videos, information on how to get radar images and software for displaying radar images, plus links to other Internet sites which distribute radar images, including:

The JPL Public Information Office also maintains a public access Internet computer site. Their URL on World Wide Web is http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ or one can use anonymous FTP to jplinfo.jpl.nasa.gov (137.78.104.2). Dial-up users via modem can connect to the site by dialing (818) 354-1333. Parameters are: no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit. This line supports speeds up to 14.4 kbps with v32 bis/v42 error correction and compression protocols, and supports up to 3 callers simultaneously.

Digital Data

SIR-C survey image data are available on CD-ROMs from the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC). The EDC is the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (Land Processes DAAC).

The survey data are also posted on the EDC World Wide Web site listed above.

Survey data are uncalibrated, low resolution (50 m) images of entire data takes. One CD contains up to twelve data takes. These data are suitable for determining the extent of area coverage, interpreting landforms, and for use in requesting high resolution standard digital frame products. SIR-C standard digital image data will be available on 8 mm tapes from the EDC in early 1995. Standard products are data frames (50 or 100 km in length) that are calibrated and that are higher resolution (~10-45 m) than the survey products. For information, contact:

Photographic products of released images are available through the JPL contractors listed below. They maintain and sell a catalog of available images which is updated periodically. SIR-CED Educational CD-ROMS

SIR-CED is an education initiative designed for middle school and high school students. A pre-launch CD-ROM (Volume ID SIRCED01) contains a Teacher's Guide, radar images, photographs from the Space shuttle, ground-based photographs, and maps of sites all around the world which were imaged by the SIR-C mission. The Teachers' Guide and Lesson Plans from SIR-CED are on-line at a World Wide Web site known as AskEric, maintained by Syracuse University, at URL: http://ericir.syr.edu/

Teacher Resource Centers

NASA's Education Division supports Teacher Resource Centers (TRCs) at each NASA Center, as well as a large number of Regional TRCs in cooperation with educational organizations around the country. It also supports a national center for distribution of audio-visual materials, known as NASA CORE (address above).
