The NASA/JPL Imaging Radar Program Outreach Opportunity

The NASA/JPL Imaging Radar Program Outreach Opportunity

It is the desire of NASA and the JPL imaging radar program to make radar data more accessible to new users. There are several ways that we are attempting to do this:

  1. Send us a letter or email to be part of our outreach program. Read this letter for what information we need. If we did not collect SIR-C data from your site, we will check if there is any AIRSAR data that you could use. AIRSAR has collected SAR data at many sites around the world, and the quality is similar to SIR-C data quality.

  2. Before requesting data, read the description of the data collection modes
  3. Sample SIR-C data is available on 8 mm tape. This sample data set is designed for software developers, so that they may incorporate the SIR-C data formats into their data analysis programs. It may also be useful to other users who would like an understanding of the data formats, for coding their own software, or for gaining experience working with radar data before acquiring their own. The data set is of Death Valley, California, USA.
  4. software for reading and decompressing SIR-C format data. This software is available through a software license from JPL, and may now be obtained via anonymous ftp to licensed users. This software, in addition to reading and decompressing the SIR-C data, may also be used to create images of any polarization, to average down the data, read the headers, and convert between SIR-C and AIRSAR data formats. (AIRSAR is an airborne SAR that has imaged sites around the world).
  5. Coverage Maps Coverage maps showing where over the Earth the Space Shuttle SRL missions collected data from. New! The coverage map for Seasat, SIR-A, and SIR-B has been added here.
