SeaSAT Atlas
Seasat Views Ocean and Sea Ice with Synthetic Aperture Radar by
Lee-Leung
Fu and Benjamin Holt(1982) is an
atlas that contains images and simple descriptions of interesting ocean
and
ice features. Imaging radar
provides a unique and unprecedented fine-scale view of the dynamics of
the
upper ocean and ice surface.
The ocean images show waves, currents, eddies, coastal and atmospheric
features surrounding North America
and Europe while the sea ice images are from the Arctic Ocean. Various
types of corrobative data
are included to help support the descriptions. Seasat was launched in
1978
by NASA carrying a suite of instruments designed primarily to monitor
the
global oceans. The satellite acquired data for only 99 days before a
massive power failure abruptly ended its mission. This atlas is
suitable
for a wide-variety of audiences, including
high school and university students as well as researchers who want to
become familiar with some of the physical
processes of the oceans as well as viewing these features from
satellites.
